Elevated Access: Where Ladders Fall Short

Cutting-edge lift equipment has greatly influenced the construction industry in recent years. The fact that a boom or scissor lift rental is a phone call away makes a world of difference on the jobsite. But while modern equipment can reach higher and move quicker, their crowning advantage is always safety.

Safety is essential in any project, and no project can be dubbed ‘successful’ where injuries have occurred. Though there have been considerable improvements on the jobsite, the risk of falls for those working at heights has persisted.

The problem with ladders

Consider these statistics from the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors:

  • Each year, more than 164,000 emergency room-treated injuries and 300 deaths in the U.S. are caused by falls from ladders.
  • Most ladder deaths are from falls of 10 feet or less.
  • Falls from ladders are the leading cause of deaths on construction sites.
  • Over the past decade, the number of people who have died from falls from ladders has tripled.

What we learn from a recent study

Boom lift rentals are better than ladders

JLG and workplace solutions company dorsaVi recently conducted a study to evaluate workers using scaffolding and ladders. DorsaVi uses a method called EMG to track how hard the workers exert themselves physically. These measurements are compared to measurements taken from workers using low-level access lifts.

What dorsaVi finds is that while workers using ladders and scaffolding have an EMG signal around 82 (high-exertion), workers using low-level access lifts only come in around 16. During ladder ascents and descents, the workers experience greater exertion in their knees, arms, back, and shoulders. Workers report virtually no strain when ascending and descending via lifts however.

What does this mean for you?

Whether you are an arborist, electrician, or do any other work that relies on elevated access, the ability to go home at the end of the day is paramount. As shown in this study between JLG and dorsaVi, modern access lifts prevent strain and fatigue, keeping you energized and safe.
