BOOM LIFTS

Picking the right boom lift can be challenging. Boom lifts come with all sorts of options, but the primary options are as follows:

  • Height (34ft-80ft)

  • Horizontal reach

  • 4×4

  • Articulating Vs. Telescopic

  • Fuel Source

Articulating boom lifts (or knuckle booms) have multiple sections that articulate. This allows them to give the operator access to locations that would otherwise be blocked by obstacles. Telescopic booms (or stick booms) on the other hand telescope out in a straight direction. They often offer more horizontal outstretch than other types of lifts.

Electric lifts are ideal for indoor use due to the lack of exhaust and access to electrical outlets, while internal combustion (IC) lifts are better suited for more remote projects.

Self-propelled boom lifts are the most common, but there are stationary options as well. Self-propelled boom lifts are extremely heavy and require large equipment to transport (with the exception of our Genie Z34-22N which can be transported via heavy pickup truck). The added expense of transportation makes the towable boom line rather important as they can be pulled by a standard pickup truck and produce less ground pressure than the self-propelled options. Towable booms cannot however be mobile while an operator is on board, they are stationary.

4WD drive provides better traction and gradeability vs the 2WD options. Most 2WD options are used on slabs and parking lots. They come in narrower frame sizes for tighter spaces and wider frame sizes for more working space.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a boom lift operate as a crane?

Boom lifts are not certified as cranes, nor are cranes certified as aerial platforms. Using either one outside of their respective intended use is prohibited by OHS.

What is the maximum height of a boom lift?

Different models provide different maximum heights. While the most common booms range between 30′-85′, some can reach as high as 185′!

What is horizontal reach?

The horizontal reach of a boom lift is how far out to the side it can reach from the center of the lift base. Normally, if you want to maximize horizontal reach, you will want a telescopic boom lift.
