Which telehandler do I need?

Pick by two numbers: the heaviest load you will lift, and how high and how far out you need to place it. Maximum capacity is only available with the boom close in. As you raise and extend the boom, the safe load gets smaller, so check the machine’s load chart for your actual height and reach. If your heaviest lift is close to a machine’s limit, step up a size.

  • Compact, about 18 to 19 ft lift: Genie GTH-5519 and JLG G5-18A, 5,500 lb rated capacity and 4,400 lb at full height. Good for loading, unloading and low-level placement on tighter sites.
  • Mid-size, 44 ft lift: Genie GTH-844, 8,000 lb rated capacity, 6,000 lb at full height and 28 ft 2 in of forward reach. The all-round construction size.
  • Large, 10,000 lb class, 55 to 56 ft lift: JLG G10-55A and JCB 510-56.
  • Large, 12,000 lb class, about 55 to 56 ft lift: Cat TL1255D and XCMG XT1256U, with about 42 to 43 ft of forward reach. For the heaviest loads placed high and far out.

Specs are taken from each manufacturer’s published spec sheet, operator manual or product page for that model. “—” means we could not confirm that figure for our machines’ model year from the manufacturer, so ask us before relying on it. Ratings can change with model year, options and configuration: always check the capacity decal and operator’s manual on the machine. Browse: All telehandlers

Who can operate

Operators: under Alberta’s OHS Code, a worker must not operate powered mobile equipment unless they are trained to operate it safely, have demonstrated competency to a competent worker designated by their employer, are familiar with the operating instructions, and are authorized by their employer (OHS Code Part 19, s.256). Make sure whoever runs the machine meets these requirements before it arrives on site.

Rental periods

Most equipment rents by the day, the week or the 4-week period:

  • Day: 24 consecutive hours
  • Week: 7 consecutive days
  • 4 weeks: 4 consecutive weeks
  • The minimum rental varies from 1 day to 4 weeks depending on the machine.
  • Rentals are based on up to 8 hours of use per day, 40 hours per week or 160 hours per 4-week period. Extra hours on metered equipment are charged.

Rates change, so we do not list them here. See current rates and availability in our online catalog, or ask us for a quote.

Delivery, pick-up and hours

Delivery area: we deliver across the greater Edmonton area, including Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Spruce Grove, Leduc, Nisku and Fort Saskatchewan. Our own trucks run within about 160 km of our yard, and we can arrange delivery further out, so ask. There is a charge for delivery and pick-up, based on the type of equipment and the distance travelled.

Pick-up and yard hours: you can also pick up from our yard at 1810 Yellow Head Trail NE, Edmonton AB T6S 1B4. We are open Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We are closed Saturdays, but Saturday pick-up or delivery is available by appointment.

Towing it yourself? Most of our equipment can be towed behind a half-ton truck or equivalent SUV with a properly sized and rated ball and hitch, but some machines need a three-quarter-ton truck, and larger machines need a heavy transport company or our delivery. Ask us which applies to your machine.

Equipment must come back with the same amount of fuel it went out with, much like a rental car.

Telehandler rental FAQ

What size telehandler do I need?

Take your heaviest load and the highest, furthest point you need to place it, then check that against the load chart. As a rough guide: 5,500 lb compact machines for low-level work, 8,000 lb for general construction, 10,000 to 12,000 lb for heavier loads at height.

How much can a telehandler lift at full height?

Less than its maximum rating. For example, the Genie GTH-844 is rated 8,000 lb but 6,000 lb at full height, and the Genie GTH-5519 is rated 5,500 lb but 4,400 lb at full height (manufacturer specs). Always use the load chart in the cab.

Telehandler or forklift?

On rough ground, or when you need to place loads up and out, choose a telehandler. On pavement or in a warehouse, a forklift is usually simpler.

Do you rent by the month?

We rent by the day, the week and the 4-week period, which suits long construction jobs.

How is delivery priced, and how far do you deliver?

There is a charge for delivery and pick-up, based on the type of equipment and the distance travelled. We deliver across the greater Edmonton area with our own trucks within about 160 km of our yard, and can arrange delivery further out.
