When a scissor lift will not reach, or you need to get up and over an obstacle, you need a boom lift. Lybroco Rentals rents articulating, telescopic, towable and atrium boom lifts in Edmonton, in battery-electric, hybrid and engine-powered models, from 30 ft up to 135 ft of platform height.
Platform height vs working height
The height in our boom lift names is the platform height. Manufacturers usually rate working height at about 6 ft higher; for example, the Genie Z-62/40 has a 61 ft 11 in platform height and a 67 ft 11 in working height. Where the manufacturer publishes it, working height is in the table below.
Which boom lift do I need?
Picking a boom comes down to height, horizontal outreach, articulating vs telescopic, ground conditions and power source.
| If you need to… | Look at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Reach over obstacles: roofs, pipe racks, equipment, parapets | Articulating boom (knuckle boom) | Multiple sections let you work up and over things in the way; many have a jib for fine positioning |
| Get maximum straight-out reach | Telescopic boom (stick boom) | Extends in a straight line for the most horizontal outreach: up to 75 to 81 ft on our 120 to 125 ft machines |
| Work indoors or on finished floors | Electric articulating boom (30 to 45 ft) | Battery powered with no exhaust; machine widths start at 3 ft 11 in |
| Tight indoor access at height | Tracked atrium lift (Easy Lift 70-36AJ) | 34.5 in wide with 70 ft working height |
| Avoid hauling a heavy self-propelled machine | Towable boom (50 ft) | Light enough to tow (JLG T500J is 5,200 lb); stays put while someone is on board |
| Rough, muddy or sloped ground | 4×4 boom or the tracked Genie S-65 TraX | 4WD and tracks give better traction than 2WD |
Articulating vs telescopic
Articulating booms bend at one or more joints, so you can get the platform to places that would otherwise be blocked. Telescopic booms extend straight out and usually give more horizontal reach. Horizontal outreach is how far out to the side the platform goes from the machine’s centre of rotation. If reach is your main problem, start with a telescopic. Our telescopic booms start with the MEC 34-J, a 34 ft diesel 4×4 telescopic with a 5 ft jib (MEC spec), and go up to 125 ft.
Capacity
Most booms in our fleet are rated for 500 lb on the platform, which includes people, tools and material. Some telescopic booms (for example the JLG 660SJ, 860SJ and 1200SJP) have a higher restricted rating with limited reach, and the Genie S-120 is rated 750 lb. The atrium lift is rated 440 lb. Check the table and the machine decal.

Fall protection and operator requirements
A harness is required in a boom lift in Alberta. The OHS Code requires a worker on a boom-supported elevating work platform to use a personal fall arrest system connected to the anchor specified by the manufacturer (or, if the manufacturer does not specify one, an anchor certified by a professional engineer), with the lanyard, where reasonably practicable, short enough to keep the worker from being ejected from the platform but long enough to do the work (OHS Code Part 9, s.156(1)). We rent fall arrest harnesses; add one for each person on the platform when you book.
Operators: under Alberta’s OHS Code, powered mobile equipment includes machines that raise workers on a powered aerial device. A worker must not operate it unless they are trained to operate it safely, have demonstrated competency to a competent worker designated by their employer, are familiar with the operating instructions, and are authorized by their employer (OHS Code Part 19, s.256). Make sure whoever runs the machine meets these requirements before it arrives on site.
Rental periods
Most equipment rents by the day, the week or the 4-week period:
- Day: 24 consecutive hours
- Week: 7 consecutive days
- 4 weeks: 4 consecutive weeks
- The minimum rental varies from 1 day to 4 weeks depending on the machine.
- Rentals are based on up to 8 hours of use per day, 40 hours per week or 160 hours per 4-week period. Extra hours on metered equipment are charged.

Delivery, pick-up and hours
Delivery area: we deliver across the greater Edmonton area, including Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Spruce Grove, Leduc, Nisku and Fort Saskatchewan. Our own trucks run within about 160 km of our yard, and we can arrange delivery further out, so ask. There is a charge for delivery and pick-up, based on the type of equipment and the distance travelled.
Pick-up and yard hours: you can also pick up from our yard at 1810 Yellow Head Trail NE, Edmonton AB T6S 1B4. We are open Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We are closed Saturdays, but Saturday pick-up or delivery is available by appointment.
Towing it yourself? Most of our equipment can be towed behind a half-ton truck or equivalent SUV with a properly sized and rated ball and hitch, but some machines need a three-quarter-ton truck, and larger machines need a heavy transport company or our delivery. Ask us which applies to your machine.
Boom lift rental FAQ
Articulating or telescopic: which do I need?
If something is in the way, like a roof edge, pipe rack or equipment, go articulating. If you need to reach straight out as far as possible, go telescopic.
How high can your boom lifts reach?
Our booms run from 30 ft to 135 ft of platform height (the number in each listing name). Working height is usually about 6 ft more. See the table above for each model.
Can I tow a boom lift with my truck?
Only the towable booms. The JLG T500J weighs 5,200 lb with a 450 lb tongue weight, and the Genie TZ-50 has a 400 lb tongue weight (manufacturer specs). Your truck, ball and hitch must be rated for the trailer; ask us which truck is needed. Self-propelled booms need a truck and trailer, so most customers book delivery.
Can I use a boom lift indoors?
Yes, with the right machine. Battery-electric articulating booms and the atrium lift are the choice for indoor work because they produce no exhaust. Ask about tire socks if you are working on a finished floor.
Do I need a harness in a boom lift?
Yes. Alberta’s OHS Code requires a personal fall arrest system attached to the manufacturer’s anchor on a boom-supported platform (Part 9, s.156(1)). We rent fall arrest harnesses.
